Rock Hill Public Library
Rock Hill, Missouri

In June 2005 the Rock Hill Public Library was notified that their facility was being vacated to accommodate a new retail development. In the short term, the Library chose to relocate to a temporary location that could accommodate their extensive collection and comfortably serve patrons while the Library Board searched for a permanent site. Located in a retail center, the library board, director and staff wanted the interiors to reflect a fresh, exciting and dynamic library environment.

As patrons enter the library they are immediately drawn to colorful oversized ovals that serve a double function; first balancing a tall, vertical space with the new, lower shelving units and secondly defining key areas of the library; the circulation desk, public computers and the children’s area.

The overall palette of the library is various shades of purple and blue with natural maple as the backdrop. The oversized carpet tiles, organic in pattern, provide a whimsical setting to the very rectilinear shelving. Clean lines with durable finishes were the focus of the soft furnishings.

The children’s area boasts vibrant colors and furnishing in fun and imaginative shapes. The furniture and shelving units are easily accessible by the library’s youngest patrons and provide them with an interactive reading space all their own.
