In the spring of 2004, the Hazelwood School District began the design phase for four (4) new Middle Schools. Bond Wolfe began to design, and prepare construction documents for two of the four schools. During the schematic design phase, Bond Wolfe engaged both the owner and community to program the space for immediate functional needs, while developing conceptual master plans to address long term projections.

In order to take full advantage of economies of scale, the 113,000 square foot facilities are located on two (2) separate sites. Each building is largely the same, but is tailored to their site. The buildings are sited on each property to allow for perimeter pedestrian, vehicular, and fire truck access. The site accommodates parking for 80 staff members and 20 visitors. Both sites have a soccer field and softball field.

The brick on steel frame buildings accommodate 900 students in 6, 7 and 8 grades. The schools are separated into two wings: a 3-story wing with 54 classrooms, and a 1-story academic wing with a media center, gymnasium, and cafeteria spaces. Each floor of the classroom wing has a different grade level containing its corresponding administrative office, which brings a presence of security and management where it is needed.

The media center incorporates the latest advancements in technology, which fosters student learning activities, and will be utilized as a library resource area. The gymnasium serves in a multipurpose role supporting sports recreation, physical education classes, and performance venues. There is an operable wall separating the stage from the gym, allowing dual use with adjacent music classrooms. The cafeteria seats 300 students with large windows providing natural light for this environment. A metal canopy shelters students as they travel to and from the bus drop-off.
