The Maplewood-Richmond Heights Elementary School was conceived in response to a series of public workshops in which the community was asked to consider the future of their district in light of aging facilities, rising operating costs and declining enrollment.   The community consensus was to divest of two ineffective elementary schools and consolidate into one state-of-the-art facility. 

The centerpiece of the school is the student media center.  The center features a large media and art collection, wireless internet access and a sunken kiva for storytelling and performance.  Each side of the media center is flanked by a series of classroom pods.  These pods include smart boards and wireless internet, faculty bays and storage areas and group work space – designed to encourage group projects and team teaching.

The community’s desire to maintain their neighborhood schools was also incorporated into the layout and exterior design of the facility.  The scale of building - along with the gables and decorative details - reflects the surrounding bungalow architecture and blends contextually within the neighborhood.
