Bond Wolfe Architects assisted the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District in the conversion of the fourth floor of the existing high school facility into a new middle school. This consolidation also required the renovation of the existing cafeteria, auditorium and performance space.

The hub of the new middle school is the commons space and dramatic stair well with large south-facing windows, overlooking the redeveloped athletic complex. Designed to give the middle school a distinct image and provide a sense of arrival, this commons area also provides students and teachers with alternative learning environments and a place to socialize with peers.

Highlights of the new middle school include: commons areas, classroom pods with operable walls between classrooms to facilitate large groups and team teaching. The classroom pods include conference rooms/tutorial spaces and interactive technology. Whimsical and festive, the renovation was intended to drastically change the aesthetic and functional character of the space
