Fire-damaged Hatherton House Hotel to go under the hammer in Bond Wolfe’s October auction
A historic Staffordshire hotel, damaged by fire and now standing vacant, is set to attract developers and investors when it goes under the hammer in Bond Wolfe’s October auction.
The former Hatherton House Hotel, located on Pinfold Lane in Penkridge, sits on a two-acre site and carries a guide price of £500,000+ in the live-streamed auction on Thursday 23 October.
The Grade II-listed property dates back to 1831, originally serving as the village rectory before later becoming a country club in the 1980s and subsequently being converted into a hotel in 1991. The building has remained vacant and derelict since a fire in December 2023, which caused significant damage to part of the complex.
Ian Tudor, commercial auction director at Bond Wolfe, said:
“This historic building, while requiring a full programme of repair and refurbishment, offers enormous potential for redevelopment or repurposing.
Hatherton House Hotel was once an elegant country retreat and, despite the fire damage, retains many of its original features and grand proportions.
The property is considered suitable for a range of alternative uses from a return to hospitality or leisure use, to conversion for residential, educational, care or wellness purposes, subject to the necessary planning consents.”
The extensive accommodation extends to approximately 34,703 sq ft and previously comprised 55 en-suite bedrooms, as well as bars, function suites, meeting rooms, offices, reception areas, kitchens and stores.
The former leisure facilities included a fitness centre, squash courts, gyms, and an indoor swimming pool.
Externally, the hotel benefits from ample parking and landscaped grounds, which also require restoration.
“Offers in excess of the guide price may be considered prior to the auction sale,”
added Mr Tudor.
The hotel occupies a prominent position adjacent to Penkridge Sports Centre and Penkridge railway station, and is only a short walk from the historic Penkridge village centre, home to a range of independent shops and amenities housed in 15th- and 16th-century buildings.
Penkridge is situated in South Staffordshire, approximately five miles south of Stafford and ten miles north of Wolverhampton, offering excellent transport links via road and rail.
The former Hatherton House Hotel will be among 179 lots appearing in Bond Wolfe’s next auction, which begins at 8.30am on Thursday 23 October.
The auction will be live-streamed via Bond Wolfe’s website, with remote bidding available by proxy, telephone or internet.
