A prominent former sweet shop and newsagents in one of Birmingham’s trendiest neighbourhoods is set to go under the hammer in Bond Wolfe’s next auction on Thursday 10 July.

Located at 1614 Pershore Road, at the southern end of Stirchley, this freehold development opportunity comes with planning permission for six apartments and a guide price of £150,000+.

Craig Upton, marketing director at Bond Wolfe, said the building holds a special place in the hearts of many locals, having served as a sweet shop, newsagents and later a pop-up fireworks store.

“This property sits in the heart of Stirchley, a suburb that’s quickly becoming one of Birmingham’s most desirable postcodes thanks to its thriving independent food and drink scene,” said Mr Upton.

“I grew up in the area and have fond memories of popping in for sweets after school. Although the building has been vacant for around two decades, it’s been a regular talking point in the community – with many, including my own mum, wondering what its future holds.

“Now, with planning permission secured, there’s a real opportunity to bring this site back to life and give this prominent junction a welcome facelift.”

The 0.1-acre site lies at the junction of Pershore Road (A441) and Fordhouse Lane (A4040) and features a former retail unit with ancillary storage, plus four large advertising hoardings – two on each side of the building.

The granted planning permission, issued by Birmingham City Council in December 2024, includes the partial demolition and conversion of the existing building, with the erection of a new structure to create six apartments. Full details and drawings are available within the legal pack.

Mr Upton added:

“Stirchley’s rise in popularity is well documented – it was named ‘Best Place to Live in the Midlands’ by The Sunday Times in 2023 and earlier rated one of the ‘coolest neighbourhoods in the UK’ by Condé Nast Traveller.

“This site presents a great chance to invest in an area on the up, with excellent transport links, local amenities, and huge potential.”

The location is well-connected, with frequent buses into Birmingham city centre, and Bournville railway station is just a short walk away, offering services on the Cross City Line.

Offers in excess of the guide price may be considered prior to the auction.

The Pershore Road property is among 197 lots in Bond Wolfe’s live-streamed auction, which begins at 8.30am on Thursday 10 July.

Bidding is available via proxy, telephone, or internet.
